§ 14-34. Animals at large without identification tag; impoundment; fees; disposition.

  • (a)

    It shall be unlawful for any owner to allow any animal to roam free or become a stray animal without such animal bearing an identification tag identifying the owner and the owner's address of such animal. If the animal control officer for the county is notified of a stray animal or free roaming animal without an identification tag, such animal control officer shall hereby be authorized to pick up such animal and place it in the county animal pound.

    (b)

    After placement in the animal pound, the animal control officer shall attempt to notify the owner of the animal if the owner is known. The owner shall then have three days to pick up his animal and shall pay to the county a fee for expenses incurred by the county in enforcing this article.

    (c)

    When such owner picks up such animal, the owner must provide proof that the animal has had the necessary shots and, if not, such shots shall be administered and the owner shall pay a fee to the county for such shots.

    (d)

    All fees and charges set forth in this article shall be established by resolution duly passed by the board of county commissioners and may be revised from time to time in like manner.

    (e)

    If the owner fails to comply with subsections (a), (b) and (c) of this section, or if the owner cannot be located, the animal shall be disposed of as provided by law.
